What we record, what we do not, and what you can ask us to change.

Machined is a free directory of Western Australian machining workshops. This page says what it records, why, and who else sees it. If you want something changed, the contact page reaches a person.

What it records when you use the directory

A cookie named machined_did holds a random identifier and nothing else: no name, no email, nothing that says who you are. It lasts a year, and it is there so that one person looking at several workshops reads as one visit rather than several unrelated ones. The site also sets the cookies it needs to work, one for your session and one that keeps the forms from being submitted from somewhere else.

Against that identifier it records the searches you run, which is the shape and size of the part and how many workshops could take it; which workshop pages you open; when you reveal a workshop's contact details; when you click through to a workshop's own website; and the site you arrived from, if your browser says.

This is counted so that a workshop can be told whether being listed is doing anything for it. A workshop may be told that fourteen searches last month matched only its Mazak. It is not told who ran them.

Clearing that cookie means later visits are not joined up with earlier ones. The directory works the same either way.

What it records when you tell us something

The contact form sends us your name, your business, your email address, your message, and your phone number if you give one. It arrives as an email so we can reply to it.

If you ask to be introduced to a workshop, or leave an address to be told when something is ready, we keep that address and the search that prompted it, and use it for that. Ask and we will delete it.

Workshops listed here

A workshop's page carries its business name, its address and suburb, its website, and the machines on its floor with what each one can hold. That is business information about a business, and it is published because the workshop agreed to be listed.

Named people, their direct emails and their phone numbers are different, and they are not published until that workshop has specifically said we may. Until then what you see is the business address and the workshop's own website, and we offer to make the introduction instead.

If you run a listed workshop: ask and we will correct anything that is wrong, withdraw a named contact, or remove your listing entirely. There is no argument to be had about it and no cost either way.

Who else sees it

Getting this site to you involves other companies: the host it runs on, the network that sits in front of it, and the provider that delivers our email. They handle the traffic or the message in order to pass it on, and that includes your IP address, the way it does for any site you open.

Clicking through to a workshop's own website goes through us first so the click can be counted. After that you are on their site, under their terms rather than ours.

How long it is kept

Usage records are kept while they are useful for showing workshops what the directory does for them. Messages and email addresses are kept until you ask us to delete them, or until they are plainly no longer needed.

Asking us about your information

You can ask what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted, and we will do it. The usage records are tied to the random identifier in your own browser rather than to you, so for those we usually cannot tell which rows are yours, which is the point of collecting them that way.

If something here has gone wrong, tell us and we will put it right. There is no process to go through and nobody to get past. The contact page reaches a person who can fix it.

Changes to this page

If what the site does changes, this page changes in the same breath, and the date at the top moves.
